Steps to Getting an Insurance License

The insurance industry can be fulfilling for anybody that wants to build a career in it. Compared to other branches of the finance industry, insurance is flexible. Even those without a college degree can earn quite a handsome sum if they work in the insurance sector. But before starting your career as an insurance agent or broker, you need to get an insurance license.  

Before getting a license, you have to plan on what line of authority to specialize in. You should choose a category that you find interesting. Once that’s done, you can proceed to check out the requirements you need to fulfill to sign up for an insurance license examination. The requirements vary in different states, so make sure you understand everything the details about the state in which you want to work.  

If you meet the requirements, register for the licensing examination for the state. Remember, earning an insurance license has its benefits. Candidates need to complete pre-licensing education mandated by the licensing authority. Every insurance license isn’t transferable, you will have to earn a separate license for every state you plan to work in. You need to score 70% or more to pass the test.  

Candidates can feel overwhelmed, especially if they have no prior experience in insurance. But they don’t have to worry. There are many other resources you can find online to help you prepare for the insurance license exam. Candidates can even take practice tests to become used to the interface as well as questions.  

If you do pass the test, you will be qualified to start selling insurance. You can then apply to various insurance agencies for work. Agents that are new to the field should also try finding a mentor who can help them be their best at their career path!
